A new hope

In a galaxy far far away...

Well, not quite, but it is a cool intro.

When our dog died, at first I was a bit reluctant to getting a new dog. Ron Howes left a comment on my post where I mourned that passing of Fnug.
This comment suggested that I read "The last will and testament of Silverdene Emblem O'Neill"
A passage in this excellent text says that the dog has heard his mistress say that when he dies she will never have another dog because she loved this one so much. The dog goes on to say that just that would make him incredibly sad, because it would mean that he had been a poor example of a dog.

Initially I had the same feelings, I couldn't get another dog etc.
But the more I thought about this text, the more I reasoned that our dog would probably feel the same way. So I started searching for Newfoundland puppies for sale.
For some reason, there aren't many litters of Newfoundlands bred in Denmark anymore., I guess it is most likely due to the economic recession that is still not quite over.

A good thing about the Internet besides woodworking blogs is the possibility of searching for things in other countries. So I took advantage of this possibility and searched for puppies in Germany.

I found a perfect puppy  that was bred by a kennel called Canis Minor near Hannover, and I have arranged that I can come and pick her up when I return home from the ship.
We are all thrilled about it, and Asger our youngest, said the other day, that he was so happy, because he couldn't imagine celebrating Christmas without a dog.

I asked the breeder Werner, if I could use a picture from his homepage, and he immediately sent me two new ones of our puppy and replied that I was more than welcome to post them, so all that combined has led me to the title of this blog post.

Bena-Benita, 6 weeks old.

  4. I have a beloved Golden Lab who is almost 14. She means so much to me that I can't imagine life without her, but I know that day is coming. When it does, I will get another dog to another what she has meant to me.

Your new dog looks wonderful and I know your old dog would be happy about it.

    1. Hi Andy

      Thanks for the comment.
Knowing the day will come is hard, but I think that getting a new dog is the best way of recognizing that your dog has made such an impression on you, that you can't imagine living without one.

I hope your dog will stay healthy for a long time still.

  5. Jonas,

It is good that you are getting a new dog, while she will never replace Fnug she doesn't need to.

Like Andy I have an older Lab and I know the day is coming, then I remember all the joy Sam the Wonder Dog gave to my life and the comfort I gave to his.

    Good on you,

    ken

    1. Hi Ken

      Thanks for the nice comment.
I don't know why my initial idea was to stay in sorrow and without a dog.
I guess I tried to do some sort of mourning period.

As I had expected, it was incredibly hard to come home and not having Fnug around. all those daily "rituals" that include the dog just kept reminding me of her. like going into the back entrance every morning to say good morning. Take her for a walk up the gravel road to follow Asger to the school bus, having a cup of tea and automatically stretching out your arm to pat her on the head etc.

Though it is hard at the time, I completely agree with you on the idea of remembering all the joy our dogs brought into our lives. And I am happy for every piece of ham I fed our dog as a treat.

I hope that Sam will continue to be a comfort for you for a long time still.

    1. Hi Bob

Thanks. I am sure we will get our hands full with a new puppy, getting it trained and suffering a few play bites from those awful sharp puppy teeth. But I know it will all be worth it.

I am also pretty sure that we will get a lot of "help" in dealing with the gift wrapping and ribbons this year.

I am glad that you have got Rudy by your side at Christmas, and I hope that you will spend the holidays together with one or more of your children and their families.

      Brgds
Jonas (whose dog is now smaller than Rudy!)
